Forging:

 

Comparatively forging is a high-new technique in which a blank is hot re-pressed in a closed tungsten carbide die which significantly changes the shape(e.g.diameter and length) of the part by suitably applying compressive force, and at the same time can give almost complete density and hence mechanical properties approaching or even surpassing those of traditional wrought parts.

 

A Forged metal can result in the following

 

 

  • Increase length, decrease cross-section, called drawing out the metal.
  • Decrease length, increase cross-section, called upsetting the metal.
  • Change length, change cross-section, by squeezing in closed impression dies. This results in favorable grain flow for strong parts
